What's so special about the 80s/90s Tama Drums?

The drum and cymbal market is notoriously difficult to break into. There are a lot of brands that have been around for decades or even centuries and they are names that people are familiar with (Ludwig, Rogers, Zildjian etc.) In order to become a contender in such a rapacious field, you MUST have a damn good product, and eventually through word of mouth (and an onslaught of advertising) you may become a frontrunner in the field, like Tama has.

Tama made drums for decades without really demanding a second look. However in the Late 70s/early 80s, they started to produce top notch gear with heavy duty hardware and the result was impossible to ignore. The hardcore Tama fans know this and that's why many of those early Superstars, Artwoods, Cordias, and Bell Brass snare drums fetch top dollar. Tama had to PROVE themselves back then. Now they don't.

This  Artwood Snare is the perfect example of 1980s/1990s Tama dedication to superior craftsmanship that begged the question "Who is this new company?"

And this RARE 15 PLY IS SOME OF THEIR BEST WORK!

I believe the actual catalog # was GR326-BE!!

Here are the lovely specs:

Top of the Line, VERY RARE, TAMA Deep 6.5" X 14" MAPLE GIBRALTER SERIES ARTWOOD Snare Drum, Made in Japan-which ALWAYS signifies Tama's top shelf gear, Original Supersmooth TAMA Cam Lever Throwoff works perfectly!! 10 Tama TUBE Style Lugs, TAMA DIECAST HOOPS supply plenty of attack,  High Gloss QUILTED MAPLE Lacquer looks great on both vintage and modern kits.  Some very light surface scratching on the hoops, the shell is CLEAN. ORIGINAL TAMA WIRES!!  TERRIFIC CONDITION!!

Overall great shape!

And Tama doesn't make snares like this anymore! Why? Because they don't have to!! They're already on top. They've sold a million Rockstars to little Tyler down the street. He doesn't know any better.

This Tama 15 PLY Gibralter Artwood Snare has a fantastic 6.5" DEEP tone that is warm and also has the punch of their best 80s/90s offerings with theory renown Diecast Hoops!  Yes, those TAMA Hoops matter!

With drum prices descending like an inevitable mudslide, the Early Tamas are one of the few snare drums that I have watched INCREASE in value over the last few years. No doubt because people have re-discovered the superior craftsmanship from this Golden Era. And what's interesting, is that this trend mirrors the original Tama "impossible to ignore" debut on the drum market almost 40 years ago.

And the 15 PLY is DAMN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!! ESPECIALLY IN SUCH GREAT CONDITION AND IN THE BIRDS EYE FINISH!! I'VE SEEN A WHITE AND A PIANO BLACK ONE ONCE. THAT'S ABOUT IT.

So do yourself a favor and grab this RARE AND WORTH EVERY PENNY, Made in Japan Tama MAPLE 15 PLY GIBRALTER Series Deep ARTWOOD 6.5" X 14" High Gloss QUILTED MAPLE Lacquer Snare Drum.

And hang onto it!! This is from the golden era of TAMA drums!
